DNA Advances May Help Identify 9/11 Victim Remains |
(ENGLISH)
The New York City medical examiner sent letters to families of 9/11 victims still
have not received their loved ones
remains that new identifications will be
forthcoming. In the World Trade Center
attack in Sept 17, 2001, 2,749 people
died. Although about 20,000 pieces of
human remains were found, the remain of some 1,150 victims have not been identified because the identification
process was not simple. The city told families last year that they had
exhausted all available DNA technology . However, they now say that
identifications are likely because of advances in DNA testing technology.
Monica Barbell who lost her husband said "I accepted five years ago that
when he was gone, he was gone, and I don't need his body to be
reminded of him, so it really doesn't matter to me if they identify a piece
or not. But, at the same time, I can't say I'd rather not have something."
There should be new hope for the families, while many of those should
have a lot of mixed emotions because they once accepted the fate like
Monica, but again, they will have to face the fact that their loved ones
were dead. If I were in one of those, and suddenly shown fragments of
bones or a very small piece of something and said " Here is your loved
one," ,,,what can I say? It would definitely be a kind of torture. Sept 11
was five years ago, but it is still unforgettable event, and will forever be
etched in my memory.
