NY Considers Ban on Trans Fats in Restaurants |
(ENGLISH)
The New York City Board of Health endorsed
a proposal that would prohibit the city’s
20,000 restaurants from serving food that
contains trans fats, which are considered the dangerous ingredients by doctors and
nutritionists. The prohibition would affect the city’s entire restaurant industry ranging from
McDonald’s to Manhattan bistros to corner
takeouts. Manhattan restaurant owners who are against the ban said banning trans fats would raise their costs and
change the taste of some menu items. On the other hand, Members of
the Board of Health said it was necessary because of the city’s high rates
of heart disease and because New Yorkers consume far more restaurant
meals and take-out food than most Americans. If approved, New York City
would be the first large city in the nation to ban trans fats.
What is trans fat? According to the FDA definition, it is a specific type of
fat formed when liquid oils are made into solid fats like shortening and hardmargarine. Trans fats raise bad cholesterol that increases your risk
of coronary heart disease, and can be found in foods such as some
margarines, crackers, cookies, snacks, fried foods and other processed
food made with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. In addition, FDA
has required food companies to list trans fats on the food label since
January 2006.
People often love to eat quick meals such as McDonald’s and snack or
cookies in vending machines at work or school. However, junk food sold
at the vending machines have been quite controversial because people
buy them without considering any nutrition facts. Schools in some districts
have already banned junk food. Also, even in the office, more than half of
workers said their companies are offering unhealthy foods and they are
unnecessarily being tempted to food vending machine , according to a
recent study. And, the next target seems to be restaurants. This is going
to be hard for restaurants, if approved. Junk food wars are likely to
continue forever.

トランス脂肪ってなんでしょう?FDA(米食品医薬品局)の定義によると
