Escape from Japan to New York |
(ENGLISH)
I read The New York Times feature article
"Escape from Japan". Oct 15, about
Japanese women who decided to seek a new
life in New York. The NY Times says young
Japanese women called "freeters" or "Neets",
known as “Slackers in the U.S (Not in
Education, Employment or Training) have
been increasing in NYC nowadays. Those
people who are often derided as selfish for
drifting through part-time jobs or pursueing a career in Art such as photography, music,
painting, dance rather than joining a
corporation or marring, came to NY to escape from any pressure. Such young people say NY gives them freedom. For
instance, An English language school owner said "There’s a feeling that
they kind of blossom here, they finally get a chance to express themselves, " A young Japanese female D.J. also said "New York is very free.
I thought, ‘If I want to do this, I can do it. In Japan you have to follow
the rails." New York now has the largest number of Japanese living in
any city outside Japan, according to the article.
I kind of understand their feelings. I also came here to carve out a new
career, my own life, and a greater future for myself. As they say, New
York gives you freedom to choose anything like going to school for a
career, devoting yourself to something you really like to do or just
hanging out at home and outside. You can start doing this at any age in
this city.No one says anything what you are doing, but at the same time,
you cannot blame anyone for your failure or anything, but yourself.
Whether you succeed or fail depends on you, not social norms or a
specific social environment. That is New York.
