Should hanging be used as a capital punishment? |
(ENGLISH)
Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging earlier this month, and later on he requested death by firing squad. What he did deserves the death sentence, but should hanging be used as a form of
capital punishment? In general, although many people think lethal injection should
be used because it is less painful and more humane than hanging, hanging is still used in New Hampshire and Washington throughout the U.S.
According to a recent article in Metro (local newspaper), the last hanging that took place in Washington state was in 1994. Why is hanging still
used? A coroner in Washington explains hanging is to cause a quick
relatively painless death and people usually die of a broken neck. However, death could be prolonged if the weight and the drop distance
do not match up.
To me, all the forms of capital punishment sounds scared. The question
here is not about killers should be killed, but whether hanging should be
used as a method of execution. In the article, a public information officer
for the Washington State Department of Corrections said “I haven’t
witnessed one yet, but I think a hanging would be difficult. The noise, the
sound the body would create..I think that would stick with people longer.” A condemned may have to get what he pays for, but the officials who
carry out the execution have to face tough situations as described above. In addition, Washington state has changed the primary method of
execution from hanging to lethal injection. (hanging is optional)
Although it is a bit of digression, in 1994, Washington, there was one
condemned man who gained a tremendous amount of weight in prison
and appealed that hanging would be cruel because he would be
decapitated. As a result, he won and got a life sentence instead.(how
come?!) After that, he lost a lot of weight. (Oh gee!)The above public
information officer said Saddam, too, may be able to escape from the
gallows by doing so. What a ridiculous idea!
PS: I got creepy, indeed, while writing this article...eeeeek!
