1.2 million of New Yorkers ask “Food or Rent”? |
(ENGLISH)
Of all places in the U.S., New York is said to have the most visible income gap.
More than 1.2 million of New York's 8.2
million people are faced with a daily
choice, food or rent. Poverty activists
say mostly, they pay rent and rely on
free food provided at a local food bank
or homeless shelter to survive. More than
one-fifth of New Yorkers live below the
national poverty line of $10,000 a year
for an individual, while large amounts of
bonuses will be paid to New York bankers.
According to a report by the Food Bank for NYC, 40 percent of families
with children had difficulty affording food in 2005. A man who came to the food bank said "I have a job, but the cost of living is so high it makes it
hard to buy food."
In addition, very recently, Mayor Bloomberg announced proposals that
the city spends an extra $150 million a year on creating programs such as
teaching low-income families how to use their financial resources
effectively and cash incentive program to fight poverty. When we speak
of poverty in NYC, we generally refer to lack of wages. Low levels of
education are associated with poverty among low-wage New Yorkers.
Mayer said before "Every New Yorker who can work should work." Giving
them a good education or motivation to work harder is a key to solve the
issue. I hope the money used for the programs will have an impact on
reducing poverty.
Note:
A food bank is a place where supplemental food is provided for low income residents or homeless so that they could stay healthy and
continue to work.
