New York City bans Slur |
(ENGLISH)
I believe most of you know which words
are ok to use and which words hurt people when used, but I’ll just let you know what was banned in New York yesterday
for your info. According to the New York
Times, the New York City Council approved a symbolic resolution of the use of the
racial slur called the n-word yesterday.
The ban is a only symbolic ban calling for
New Yorkers to voluntarily stop using the n-word and so it will not be enforced. The ban is intended to educate a
new generation that does not understand the US history about the
epithet's painful past against blacks. On the other hand, some blacks are
shrugging off the move because the term has been more recently
adopted by black entertainers such as in hip-hop music and it has a new
meaning to them. Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx said he would not stop using
the word, and didn't see anything inappropriate about blacks using it
within their own circles.
I myself never use the n-word, but often hear curse words such as
“f-word”, “bitch” and “ “bastard.” Also, you may use these
words “moron” “shit” “asshole” when you are upset. The most important
thing I think is all the people, not only the youth has to keep in mind
these offensive words obviously hurt others. In the article, a 17 year old
boy says ''We grew up saying it, and it's what I say all the time.''
What we have to teach them is how words would affect people in both
positive and negative ways, even if it was unintentional. In addition,
N-word often brings a big trouble to people. Please read my previous
post.
