Radio Host Fired for Racial Remarks |
(ENGLISH)
Uh-oh again! A big celebrity made an inappropriate racist remark and it has sparked an enormous controversy in the US . (Read my past entries on other celebrities who
spewed racist remarks!) I saw his face a lot making headlines in Friday’s morning newspapers and found a couple of interesting words in it produced by American mass culture that you might be unfamiliar with. Since my blog is for learning English, let's look over the terms being used there ! First, let me tell you what happened very very briefly.
Popular radio host Don Imus referred to women of the Rutgers basketball
team as “nappy-headed hos.” Although Imus deeply apologized several
times soon after the public outrage, his own radio program which had
continued for 30 years was immediately cancelled.
What’s this phrase "Nappy-headed hos.”? “Nappy” is a word often heard
that represents a tightly curled hairstyle (Afro) and black people were
once offended by the word like N-word during the slavery times. “Ho” is a
slang term of "whore" or "slut." So “Nappy-headed hos” is in other
word, “Curly haired prostitutes.” (Horrible!) In addition, “Nappy” and “Ho”
are very often used in rap or hip hop music.
By the way, I’ m rather surprised at the
huge reaction of people to this. I don’t
listen to his radio show, but it seems he
had been making these type of comments
for years. So, I don’t understand why the
heck there is such an uproar over this now?
though I’m a bit sick of the race-related
remarks. Haha. He is one of the first shock
jocks in the US. Now, go look up the term
“Shock jock”! It is used to describe a type
of disc jockey or broadcaster who attracts
listener or audience's attention using slur
or insults that many people may find it offensive. Some people like shock
jocks because it’s good for a chuckle or a laughter, while others hate
them because they get a big money by insulting others. Why the American entertainment industry put them on the air is because they bring in easy
revenue. It’s just the same like Japanese “Dokuzetsu Talent.”
As for Imus, despite his mistake, some people have some sympathy for
him because he is using millions of dollars he made from his stupid,
horrible remarks (!!) for sick kids, disabled veterans and society. So, he is
paying the price for what he’s done. The latest news says members of the
Rutgers women's basketball team accepted his apology. I personally
want to give him a chance to speak on the radio again. A man makes a
mistake. He now knows where to draw the line in terms of what he can speak on the public airwaves. Probably!

「Nappy-headed hos」
「Nappy-headed hos」
