Oscar Pistorius、'The Fastest Man On No Legs' |
(ENGLISH)
Amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius(South Africa), known as the
world's "fastest man on no legs", was born without fibulas and had both his legs amputated at 11 months old. Now 20, he races on carbon fiber blades attached below his knees and has set several world records for disabled athletes.
His dream is to compete in the Olympics (He is a 2004 Paralympic gold
medalist) He is now hoping to compete in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
To do that, he needs to meet a qualifying standard and receive
permission from the I.A.A.F (International Association of Athletics
Federation )that has opposed his involvement in able-bodied races.
Last Friday, Pistorius was allowed to compete against able-bodied
runners in a 400 meter competition held in Rome while researchers study
whether his prosthetics give him an unfair advantage and whether he
should be allowed to compete in the Olympics. Although his time, 46.90
seconds, was a bit away from his personal best (46.56) and the Olympic
qualifying standard (45.95). he finished second in the race. Furthetmore,
he had a greater challenge to debut against elite able-bodied competition
in England Sunday, where the field includes the Olympic champion Jeremy
Wariner. Unfortunately, he placed seventh in the 400 meters in heavy rain
and then was disqualified because he ran in the outside lane. To qualify
for next year's Beijing Olympics, Pistorius will have to run a 46.3 before
July 2008 and get IAAF approval.
It looks like he can run so fast that no one in the IAAF can believe in his
absolutely amazing athletic ability. haha. One of the IAAF officials
says “It is not the problem of artificial legs, but that he can spend less
energy. It is more complicated, but it needs to be studied.” Sure, the rules
should be designed for fair competition, but who does not want to see
him runing with elite athletes in a Olympics race? I do! I do want to see
him, and so I'll cheer for him!
Courage is the discovery that you may not win,
and trying when you know you can lose.”

What a great challenge!
