Has 'Kissing Sailor' Mystery Been Solved? |
(ENGLISH)
Have you ever seen this famous 1945 Life magazine photograph, "The
Kiss"? The photograph was taken in Times Square Aug. 14, 1945, Victory
over Japan Day, by the Life photojournalist Alfred Eisenstaedt and has
since become the single most reproduced image in the magazine's
collection. However, the identities of the sailor and nurse in the picture
have remained a mystery ever since.
Glenn McDuffie, who has claimed to be the sailor in the photo, spoke
about the truth of the photo in celebration of his 80th birthday today.
The mystery kiss occurred in New York's Times Square when McDuffie,
who was 18 years old, heard the news that World War II had finally
ended.
"When I got off the subway I got to the top of the stairs and the lady up
here said, 'Sailor, I'm so happy for you, that World War II had finally
ended. ' I asked her why and she told me the war was over and I could
go home. I ran into the street jumping and hollering."
It was then he kissed the nurse.
McDuffie says he has taken numerous polygraph tests to prove that he
is the real kissing sailor. No deception was indicated in the tests, but it
didn't prove that he was the sailor.
McDuffie, who is now battling lung cancer, says that he wants the truth
to come out once and for all. He tried to meet the photographer,
Eisenstaedt, at one point, but all he said was "not my sailor."
While the identity of the nurse has also never been confirmed. (though it
seems some women have claimed...) Although experts say "McDuffie is the
one", Life and Eisenstaedt have never identified the couple so far.
Life and the photographer are never going to tell the identity of the couple, I guess. To them, the photo, that captured the feelings of an entire
country at the moment the war ended, is an iconic image of the 20th
century and it doesn't matter who the sailor and nurse are. Personally,
I don't mind if the 'Kissing Sailor' Mystery is unsolved. I feel sorry for
McDuffie, if true, but it's much more romantic to have it be just strangers.
You can create your own imaginary love story. Just imagine if she was his
loved one, and he had really missed her.... wow... I think the photo was
absolutely something that every sailor could share wishes of "If-I-were-
that-guy."
By the way, another awesome kissing scene is definitely the famous
Robert Doisneau "Kiss" photo. Unfortunately, this is a staged photo, not
a spontaneous one. Please see the photo below.
(Sigh...) Just breathtaking, isn't it? How many times have I wished "If
I were the woman in the photo..."
