Martin Luther King Jr. Day |
(ENGLISH)
The third Monday in January is Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day in the U.S. Americans
always celebrate his birthday on this day
to honor the work he did. What were his
contributions to America? As we have
learnt, most blacks in America were slaves
before. African-Americans were brought to
the U.S as a slave in the 18th century.
Those enslaved Africans were not given
any equal opportunities such as civil
rights, voting rights and even reading or writing rights until the American
civil war against slavery. (1865) Yet, although the abolition movement to
end slavery emerged in the north and the U.S. Constitution finally offered
certain civil rights to black Americans after the Civil war, many of the
discriminatory acts including disenfranchisement and racial segregation
(see note below) still remained legally in the South because many whites
still did not want to treat blacks the same way as whites.
In the mid 20th century, Martin
Luther King, Jr. who helps change America emerges as a leader of
the American civil rights movement. In 1955, a black woman who
refused to surrender her bus seat
to a white man, was arrested and
fined for violating the segregation
law. The bus incident led a 382
day bus boycott led by King and
garnered international attention
how Blacks were unequally treated.
Despite his several arrests, King organized nonviolent actions and led
marches for blacks' right to vote desegregation, labor rights and other
basic civil rights. And most of these were successfully enacted into U.S
law. In honor of King’s day, today, let me introduce his famous speech
partially(really partially) that delivered to over 200,000 civil rights
supporters in 1963 during the March on Washington D.C for freedom that
even helped convince many white people to support the civil rights
movement.
In addtion, in 1964, King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work,
but assassinated in 1968. This is one of the greatest dreams I have ever
heard in my whole life. Dr. King, Happy Birthday!
I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties
of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply
rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the
true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident:
that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of
former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit
down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state
sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of
oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation
where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the
content of their character.
I have a dream today!
Note:
racial segregation is characterized by separation of people of different races in daily life such as eating in a restaurant, using a rest room, attending school and going to the movies.
