Woman pissed off by anti-god quote on Starbucks cups |
(ENGLISH)
If you have been to Starbucks in the US, you might have noticed little sayings printed on a Starbucks cup by now. Printing quotes on the side of their cups is a part of campaign called “The Way I See It” they started in 2005 summer. They started doing it as a way to
promote a free and open conversation in the true tradition of the coffee house, where intellectual people get together, discuss philosophy and exchange ideas or thoughts on a wide variety of topics, while
enjoying delicious coffee. Printed quotes are from celebrities, modern
artists and customers. Yes! you can also submit your own quotes to
Starbucks Web site and you have a chance of it being printed on
Starbucks coffee cups! Wow.
However, it seems those quotes are giving some customers an extra jolt.
A catholic woman has complained about a religious-related statement
printed on a cup she bought last week.
Printed on the cup was:
"Why in moments of crisis do we ask God for strength and help? As
cognitive beings, why would we ask something that may well be a figment
of our imaginations for guidance? Why not search inside ourselves for the
power to overcome? After all, we are strong enough to cause most of the
catastrophes we need to endure."
--- Customer living in London ---This (former?) Starbucks Freak woman said her
Starbucks days are over because “As someone
who loves God, I was so offended by that. I don’t think there needs to be religious dialogue on it.
I just want coffee.” She also said “I wouldn’t feel right going back.”As a matter of fact, this is not
the first time the Starbucks quotes have caused controversy. Starbucks cup with a pro-homosexual message caused controversy in Texas in 2005.
It reads
"My only regret about being gay is that I repressed it for so long. I surrendered my youth to the people I feared when I could have been out there
loving someone. Don't make that mistake yourself. Life's too damn short."
About 500 cups with the message by gay author were removed due to complains that it would promote homosexuality. In addition, Starbucks cups also says “The quote is the author’s opinion, not necessarily that of Starbucks.” Oh gee...
Actually I did not know the message was to provoke conversations or
debates. (It’s actually caused the debate. hehe) It is just funny and
nothing negative about God for me! On the contrary, that’s good advice,
huh? As for the gay quote, too, that’s true. The life is short. I wonder
why they focus on only gay lifestyles? This is just like:
“They do not see the wood for the trees.”
Another phrase has also popped into my head:
“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”-- Confucius.
Oops, I got to say this, too. “The quote is the author’s opinion, not
necessarily that of Valeny.”

「The Way I See It」という2005年に
